Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

What is MTSS?

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a way that schools problem-solve and organize resources to meet the needs of all students, To support our district vision and goals, District #205 provides high-quality core instruction for every student as well as additional learning opportunities for those students who may need more support in one or more of the following areas:

  • Academics

  • Social Emotional Skills

  • Behavior & Attendance

MTSS is a three-tiered system of intervention that is:

  • designed to help teachers focus on providing high-quality learning opportunities

  • matched to students’ needs and monitored on a frequent basis to ensure successful outcomes.

MTSS

3Tiers

What are these "tiers?"

TIER 3 (1-5%): High-Intensity Support for individual students

TIER 2 (5-15%): Early Intervention; High-Efficiency Strategic Support using small group interventions

TIER 1 (100%): Differentiated instruction for all students, using best evidence-based supports. Students receive additional support at Tier 2 and Tier 3.

More on Tiers

What does this mean?

  • Any student can receive interventions and support in academics, behavior, and/or social skills.

  • A student’s level of support can move back and forth from different “tiers” depending on what they need.

  • Test scores and other assessments are used to make plans for helping students and to adjust plans as needed.
