There’s something powerful that happens when classrooms open their doors to new voices, new energy, and new connections—and that’s exactly what we experienced at Lombard Middle School through our partnership with the Monmouth College TARTANS Program.

Recently, our 6th grade students had the opportunity to engage in a series of learning stations led by college students from Monmouth College. These weren’t just typical classroom activities; this was learning brought to life through collaboration, creativity, and connection.

Each station was designed to get students thinking, participating, and working together in small groups. The format allowed our Zephyrs to take risks, ask questions, and engage in a different kind of learning experience—one that felt fresh, interactive, and fun. And when students are smiling, talking, and fully engaged, we know something meaningful is happening.

But what made this experience truly special was the human connection.

Our students didn’t just rotate through activities; they connected with mentors. They saw what it looks like to be a college student. They interacted with positive role models who were patient, encouraging, and invested in their success.

At the same time, this partnership provided an invaluable experience for the Monmouth College students. Working directly with middle schoolers gave them a chance to practice real-world teaching skills. facilitating discussions, managing small groups, and adapting in the moment. They weren’t just leading activities; they were learning how to build relationships, communicate effectively, and grow as future educators and leaders.
